What Is a Lead?
Before we dive into methods, let’s get clear on what we mean by a lead. For us, a lead must at least have:
First and last name
Email address
LinkedIn profile
Role and Company
These basics allow you to personalize your approach—crucial if you want to stand out. The work of finding and refining your leads sets you up for success. So, where do you get these leads from?
Layer One: Manual Scraping – The Bare Bones Approach
The most straightforward approach is manual scraping. Go to where your leads are—most likely LinkedIn—and start searching by industry, role, or other key factors. This is time-consuming but gives you full control over the quality of your leads.
Pros: Full control over quality, no upfront costs.
Cons: It doesn't scale well; cold outreach is a numbers game, and the numbers are against you with this method.
Yes, it’s time-consuming. Yes, it might feel like digital archaeology. But it gives you full control over the quality of your leads, which is crucial. The downside? If you plan to scale up your outreach, manually scraping leads will probably get you out of business before it gets you any business. It’s a start but not a sustainable solution for growth.
Layer Two: Buying Lead Databases – Quick but Risky
Another approach is to buy a lead database. These databases offer quick access to thousands of leads and are usually inexpensive.
However, I don’t recommend this. Here’s why:
Oversaturation: Many others have bought the same leads, meaning these prospects are bombarded with outreach.
Mismatch: These databases aren’t tailored to your ICP, leading to wasted effort and poor results.
Overall, buying a pre-packaged list is a risky move. You might save time but likely burn through cash without meaningful outcomes.
Layer Three: Hiring Freelancers – Cost-Effective and Flexible
A smarter approach is to hire a freelancer. You can find freelancers on platforms like Upwork or Fiverr who will generate leads based on your ICP. This cost-effective method (about $0.30 per lead) gives you some control over quality.
Pro Tip: Hire three to five freelancers and ask each for a list of 100 leads. This will give you up to 500 leads for around $150. Then, evaluate which list has the highest quality.
Ensure you run the collected email addresses through an email verification tool like NeverBounce. Sending emails to non-existent addresses will increase your bounce rate and hurt your domain's reputation, landing you in the dreaded spam folder. The better your data quality, the more successful your outreach will be.
